Castor Oil
INCI: Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil
Product Overview
Castor Oil is a viscous, high-functionality natural oil derived from the seeds of Ricinus communis. Its exceptionally high content of ricinoleic acid (≥85%) gives it unique chemical behavior compared to other vegetable oils—offering enhanced polarity, solubility, and emolliency. A staple in both traditional and advanced formulations, it is valued for its versatility across a wide range of cosmetic applications.
Sensory Characteristics
Appearance: Clear to pale yellow, medium-to-high viscosity liquid
Odor: Mild, fatty, slightly earthy odor characteristic of refined castor oil
Texture: Thick, cushiony, and slightly tacky; forms a protective film on the skin
Key Functional Attributes
Polar Emollient: Creates an occlusive, film-forming barrier that reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and enhances long-lasting skin hydration.
High Solvency: Effective carrier for oil-soluble actives, dyes, and essential oils; improves pigment dispersion in decorative cosmetics.
Viscosity Modifier: Naturally thickens and structures anhydrous systems such as balms, ointments, and lip products.
Oxidative Stability: High stability due to low polyunsaturated content; suitable for formulations with extended shelf life.
Low Comedogenicity: Rating 1 – unlikely to clog pores; well-suited for sensitive and acne-prone skin.
Formulation Guidelines
Usage Range: 1–20% typical; up to 100% in oil-only systems
May impart tackiness—blend with esters or lightweight oils to enhance slip and after feel
Compatible with a wide range of emollients, waxes, and surfactants
Stable in pH 4–9 and under typical heating and emulsification conditions
Shelf Life: 24 months (sealed; store in a cool, dry environment)
